Religious Movies

This Guardian article makes a good case that the films that best embody the “Christmas Spirit” or best depict Jesus’ values are the more secular ones, and evangelists tend to produce worse movies. At the very least, it’s an interesting read, but I find it funny that the classic movie portrayal of Jesus was produced by an atheist Marxist.

  • This is perhaps surprising .. Hollywood movies, even the classiest ones, go straight for entertainment value, as the said .. movies that are truly respectful about Jesus, therefore, would not be able to include many of the off-color things audiences have now come to expect .. The most recent example was "The Nativity Story," which, while being very respectful, was also very boring!

  • Well the wintery "holiday spirit" or "Christmas season" is rooted in the pagan celebration of the winter solstice as well. It's really been a secular holiday longer than a Christian one. The Christ story fits very well within earlier mythological frameworks, and this probably had a good deal to do with the spread of Christianity.

If religion were abolished, people would still celebrate Christmas. We like to take a break from endless toil and have an excuse to see family, etc. Human nature isn't too hard to figure out.
